Jewellery artists from 22 countries all over the world come together in a memorial exhibition for Manfred Bischoff who passed away a year ago. At some point or other, they have all been taught by Manfred at Alchimia, contemporary jewellery school in Florence, and have each submitted one piece to the exhibition that honours a great teacher.

German born Manfred Bischoff lived in Tuscany in a house that was in itself a piece of exquisite art. Its magical interior made a natural and perfect framework for his work that has been called by many names: sensual, poetic, lyrical, great, intimate, strong, beautiful, satirical and always surprising. He worked in 22K gold, as pure as he could manage and still maintain a rigidity in the metal that allowed him to execute his ideas in delicate and well crafted pieces, often accompanied with subtle pink coral and drawings.

His dedication to the language of jewellery and his visions were most likely one of the reasons that the Alchimia school managed to become known and respected internationally in a relatively short time span.

The teacher
As a student at Alchimia, you never really met Manfred until the third year. He was a giant figure who arrived to the narrow street in Florence on Tuesdays. He spent time with the older students, watched the world from behind his sunglasses when he leaned onto the wall at coffee breaks, and then he vanished again.

It was not until you were there yourself – in your final year – that you met the myth and began to appreciate his capacity to engage in your work and to show you how you might develop it. He was a surprisingly selfless teacher, and during critiques in the small classroom he managed to create a space for you and him to engage in a dialogue about your work that was stripped of second agendas and based solely on how he could help you to become a better artist.

It is only later, you come to understand how exceptionally truthful and helpful he tried to be in order to make you grow as a person and as an artist.

About the exhibition
A former student, Isabel Dammermann, took it upon herself to make a special event for the teacher Manfred Bischoff who inspired so many. At the same time, she has managed to create a very interesting exhibition that is on display during the Munich Jewellery week 2016.

About Manfred
Manfred was born in 1947 in Germany. After a goldsmithing apprenticeship, he studied with Reinhold Reiling in Pforzheim and Hermann Jünger in Munich. He lived and worked in Munich and Berlin before relocating to Tuscany. His work can be found in collections including the Danner-Stiftung Collection, Munich, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Power House Museum, Sydney, NSW.

When someone looks at a closed box she gets curious and wants to know what could be in it. Before she opens the box, her excitement grows, particularly if what she expects to find is a beautiful piece of jewellery.

In reality, jewellery is almost always presented in a plain, boring box. Even though it is clear that the jewellery plays the main role, the packaging usually does not enhance the beauty and value of it. We have asked ourselves: couldn’t there be a better symbiosis between jewellery and its’ storage or presentation container? A box should be for a piece of jewellery like a frame is for a painting. The idea is that the jewellery artist would create both the jewellery and its container in harmony and symbiosis with each other.

Everyone and Everywhere is an Island #55

Location:
Cafe Clara
Isabellastraße 8, Munich

One night event 25.02.2016 17:00-21:00

Artists:
Märta Mattsson, Klara Brynge, WALKA

‘No man is an Island, entire of it self; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main’. This is from a poem by John Donne from the seventeenth century. It is an expression emphasizing a person’s connections to his or her surroundings and/or other persons.

Two Chilean artists specialized in carving horns and two Swedish artists specialized in metalsmithing and the preservation of organic materials, set out to explore the enigma of the Easter Island together. On one of the most isolated islands in the world, located 2,000 miles off the Chilean coast, they begun their journey into unknown territories. Now, in the 21st century, humans have the possibility of accessing the most remote places of the earth. We can encounter and make unlikely constellations and connections: everyone and everywhere is an island. Nothing is carved in stone or permanent. We are free to make voyages into both physical and physiological islands. Four artists with diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds unite and explore familiar and unfamiliar grounds. What connects them is their passion and curiosity for the transformation of traditional crafts and materials.

Come and see our first pieces of jewellery and chat with us about our experiences from this mysterious island. The project is ongoing and will continue with exhibitions in both Sweden and Chile in 2016/2017.

(AV17)GALLERY invites you to participate at
METALLOphone: BONDS
The 3rd International Biennial of Contemporary Metal Art

The contemporary metal art biennial “METALLOphone”, which started five years ago, has become international and the only of its kind event in Lithuania dedicated only to metal art. After the success of the biennial “METALLOphone: personally” 2014, where fifty artists from twenty countries (Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, USA, Columbia, Poland, Sweden, Greece, Australia, Spain, The Netherlands, Israel, Germany, Italy, (n.b. South) Korea, Belgium, United Kingdom, Ireland, Argentina and Japan) have presented their works, this year the event returns with a new mission – to connect different artists around the world who speak one identical metal language.
The major factor in the biennial “METALLOphone: bonds“ 2016‘s program context becomes the metal bond that destroys big distances between different cultures, countries and people. Like a unifying language, metal not only connects the artists throughout the world, but at the same time, through creative process, peculiarly objectifies an intangible bond existing between the creator and the environment. Every person sees the world in their own way, describes different phenomena in their own words, so the bonds, which are given meaning by the metal with gathered medial qualities, become authentic, unique stories of the artists. The biennial invites the artists to capture their bond with metal and then through metal – with the world not only in the works, but also in a short following text.

The “METALLOphone: bonds" 2016 will include a new program – online international lecture cycle. Speakers from various countries around the globe and different schools will share their knowledge and observations about the contemporary metal art creation, movements and technologies as well as ancient traditions and conceptual perspective combined in art.
